Department of Atomic Energy

The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) came into being on August 3, 1954 under the direct charge of the Prime Minister through a Presidential Order. According to the Resolution constituting the AEC, the Secretary to the Government of India in the Department of Atomic Energy is ex-officer Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission. The Secretary to the Government of India in the Department of Atomic Energy is ex-officer Chairman of the Commission.DAE has been engaged in the development of nuclear power technology, applications of radiation technologies in the fields of agriculture, medicine, industry and basic research.DAE comprises five research centers, three industrial organizations, five public sector undertakings and three service organizations. It has under its aegis two boards for promoting and funding extra-mural research in nuclear and allied fields, mathematicsand a national institute (deemed university).It also supports eight institutes of international repute engaged in research in basic sciences, astronomy, astrophysics, cancer research and education.

 

The Indian Atomic Energy Commission was first setup in August 1948 in the Department of Scientific Research, which was created a few months earlier in June 1948. The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) was setup on August 3, 1954 under the direct charge of the Prime Minister through a Presidential Order. Subsequently, in accordance with a Government Resolution dated March 1, 1958, the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) was established in the Department of Atomic Energy. The Prime Minister (late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru) also laid a copy of this resolution on the table of the Lok Sabha on March 24, 1958. According to the Resolution constituting the AEC, the Secretary to the Government of India in the Department of Atomic Energy is ex-officer Chairman of the Commission. The other Members of the AEC are appointed for each calendar year on the recommendation of the Chairman, AEC and after approval by the Prime Minster.

India France Cooperation in Energy Sector: 

A landmark Agreement on Civil Nuclear Cooperation was signed between India and France on 30 September, 2008 during the visit of Prime Minister H. E. Dr. Manmohan Singh to France.

This has resulted in collaboration in many related areas and both countries have concluded a number of agreements.

In 2009, DAE participation in the NEA/OECD Working Groups started.

During former President Sarkozy's visit to India in December 2010, a General Framework Agreement and an Early Works Agreement were signed between NPCIL and AREVA.

India is one of the members of the seven member International initiative of ITER being set up in Cadarache, France. For more details visit: http://www.iter.org
